At the time of his death, Ulysses S. Grant was beloved and respected by a grateful nation. His birthplace was considered a national shrine. It was removed from Point Pleasant and displayed first in Cincinnati. It was later sold to Henry Chittenden, a businessman from Columbus, Ohio who transported the cottage to Columbus. It later was moved to the grounds of the Ohio State Fair. In 1896 it was enclosed in a limestone and glass structure to protect it from the elements. In 1936 the birthplace was returned to Point Pleasant and reconstructed on the original foundation--just in time for the great Ohio River Flood in January 1937.
